I had been to language school in Malaysia for 2 month, and I became friend with Algerian who were a teacher.
One day, we talked about different of labor situation between Algerian school and Japanese school. Gradually, our class teacher and many other students joined this discussion. We could share each of our opinion and feelings.
I will write their nationality instead of name.
SORA: When you were a teacher, what were you doing in weekend in your country?
Algerian: One day, I almost spend preparing lessons or marking tests. Other day, I usually spend with my family or friends.
SORA: Wow… What is the beautiful weekend…! Do you know that almost teachers in Japan don’t have holiday in weekend.
Korean: What?? Are there lessons weekends also?
SORA: No, there are lessons just weekday. Do you know “club activity”? It gives an opportunity to do sports or cultural doing for students. For example, Baseball club, soccer club, basket ball club, ensemble and so on. Most Japanese student should join it and practice every day including weekends. Most of teachers also, they have to go school to coach them on weekends also. I have friends who are teacher, they have had less than 1 week summer holidays.
SORA: Basically, it’s difficult to get holiday by teachers in Japan.
Italy: It’s like a robot… If we don’t rest, we will break our body and mental…
Saudi Arabia: Wait… Is it same for student? Student also don’t have holidays…isn’t it?
SORA: Exactly, yes… It depends on school, but when I was a junior high school student, I have had only one holiday a month.
Italy: No way…!! It’s difficult to believe it… By the way, how long student spend in their school?
SORA: Generally, they spend 7am or 8am to 5pm or 6pm.
Saudi: R…really…?! In our county, we only stay 8am to 1pm!
Yemen: Yemen is also about like that.
Korea: it’s too much short…
Italy: How about teachers? How long teachers spend in school?
SORA: it also depends on person, but almost my teacher friends, they spend 7am to 9pm in their school.
Algerian: Why should they stay at school as long time? When do they meet their girlfriend or boyfriend…? Don’t they complain this strange situation?
SORA: They still don’t notice that this is strange situation. They think this is normal and they can’t doubt about usual custom.
Italy: If you complain about it in the teacher conference, how many teacher support you?
SORA: umm…it’s difficult question… In my opinion, 30% to 40% teachers don’t support me.
Italy: …You mean, other teachers support you…?
SORA: I don’t think so. Other teachers don’t say their opinion, or they don’t have their opinion.
Yemen: I have heard it before. Japanese are not good at explaining their opinion.
Saudi: This is the Japanese custom… right?
Yemen: Don’t Japanese people know about human right? Don’t they be taught about it?
SORA: I don’t think it’s enough. At least, in their school, it’s too difficult to claim about their right.
Yemen: But even if you confront about this situation, you don’t have to be afraid. We will support you. It may need long time, I believe that it will be better.
Italy: You are member of us, this is the strongest international team, right? You are supported all of us. You can change this situation.
I felt so happy because even we have different background, we discussed Japan’s strange labor situation.
Even Japan’s school, there are not like this conversation.
They listened my claim seriously, and they told their opinion and support me.
I want many people know this conversation.
I posted same article on twitter by Japanese.
More than 6 thousands people spread it.
